Online Communities

Hello Gang

Well, hopefully you have noticed this week, that online communities are everywhere.  The internet and social media have made the world a much smaller place.  As consumers and citizens we "have a voice" and we are no longer just passive observers.  Oh yeah, just one little thing, as more people "use their voice" it can get rather loud!

So, what communities did you observe?  Was it a positive experience or did you feel over whelmed by the amount of input?  For those of you struggling to "find a home", hang in there.  I'm sure that as you delve into the world of social media you will naturally come across interesting forums that you never realized where there.  For now, if you haven't found something try checking out eHow.com, you should surely be able to find an article of interest.  Once you find an article view comments and join the conversation!  Now days, just about every article provides you the opportunity to respond.  So if you like to follow the news, perhaps Yahoo News or MSN is a better option for you.

The opportunity to communicate is all around us.  Just be sure to follow good netiquette.  You should be respectful at all times, even to those who are not.  Be sure that you are showcasing your insights and that your input is well written, easy to read and clear.  For more on netiquette check out the short article http://www.ehow.com/about_4609432_why-do-people-use-netiquette.html

Looking forward to hearing your feedback!

Hello Jenn!

Surfing on the web I found a lot of very interesting communities, and as I am passionate by musicals and especially The Lion King one, I have decided to post two messages on two communities related with this topic :
- Post on Sci-Lang Google Group about Lion King’s Lyrics
- Post on Rec-Art-Theater-Musical Google Group about musicals in Broadway

See you on Wednesday!

Hi Jeannette,

I checked out the web site you have recommended us : eHow.com and I really think it is interesting because there are plenty of articles about different topics.
I posted a comment on: "How to behave professionally on Facebook". I think I found this article at the right moment compared to our current study.
Then, I left a message on: "How to plan a French meal", this article was very fun to read.
Thanks for this link : ).
See you on Wednesday

Hi Jeannette,

I participated in two virtual communities.

First,it is the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks community for hiking because I like hiking, nature and any national park in the U.S.

At the first post, I asked the members how many days I should plan to see around Sequoia. After
that, some members gave me a couple of recommendation, and then they gave me some good specific place in Sequoia and much details of the planning, so I expanded to ask about the
response to plan my Sequoia trip efficiently.

Another, it is the gravestone community because
my job is a masonry work and I specialize in gravestones.

First, I asked the members that there is any organization at which I can learn how to make a gravestone in the U.S because I want to improve
the market of gravestone in Japan.

However, my question is a kind of particular question, so it seems that they are struggling
to reply an accurate answer.

I have been waiting for any response so far.

Will keep you posted if I make any progress on this request.

Thanks,

KEN

I participated in two forums: Mashable.com and LinkedIn.com
For LinkedIn I commented on a discussion on the upcoming beta dubbed Adobe Muse which would be for web design which is something I have been learning on my own. My comment was in regards to how a program such as Muse would be great for someone like me who has a tough time keeping up with learning html but still want to produce a decent website.

The second forum, at Mashable, was a discussion about Facebook and the new Timeline feature. My commentary had to do with privacy. The point I brought up was if Facebook was bothering to request users permission to funnel information into Timeline or is permission implied by simply being a user.

I quite enjoyed participating in both forums and being able to share my opinion and read others. Its very interesting reading other point of views.

Hi!
One comment I posted is on the Visual Tourist. I looked for something about Japan, and I found someone who was asking for is his trip itinerary. So I made some advice to him! I wonder why he is planning to go to Kanazawa.

My other one is the one I posted on bit-tech. They were talking about the new iPhone (iPhone4S, not iPhone5), so I posted a comment about Siri on that. I wonder if it’ll cover Japanese.

It took me long time to find something that interests me. Thanks to Apple, I had something to post. But I won’t use their product.

Hi Jeannette,

I found 2 groups when I was surfing on Internet. I love to cook (but I don't say that I'm a good cooker =p) and especially dessert like tiramisu, crumble, pies, etc. So I joined the tamaras sweet treats (a yahoo group)and post a comment to know some advices. I also joined an other group which deals with the interior design. It's fun to bring some ideas, to create et recreate a living room, a bedroom, bathroom etc. I post a comment to know small room can appear bigger
But for now, nobody response me. I am waiting for this.

see you tonight!

Hey Jenn,

i signed up for an iphone and a yosemite community.

Unbelievable - the iphone community sent me mails almost an hour before it was on the famous news pages: Steve Jobs died today.
It is unbelievable sad for me, last night i talked to my dad in Germany about Steve and showed him a Video of his inflaming speech @ Stanford Graduation..

Besides that and to put a smile back on everyone's faces, read my new Blog entry:

Hi everyone!
I participated in two conversations on blogs dedicated to photography. I found them through Google and Blogger.
I decided to post on those two as I'm really interested in photography, especially now that I'm here in the US, as I get the opportunity to take pictures of landscapes I would never be able to catch in my home country, France.
I still can"t really find out how my camera 100%, so I think such blogs can be helpful for me! :)

I can build my brand online by building a website with my own domain and hosting, engaging with my audience, defining my target market, keeping my eyes on the competition, and providing relevant content to establish trust and credibility. I can use social media – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, online forums, community blogs, Google Search, and friends and family – to promote my brand and to make relationships, share information, see who is talking about my company, find other professionals in my field.

I recently joined in the groups "wheel-of-time" "laker-nation" "transferclub" and "ShareMagazine".I can' t help reading in "ShareMagazine" in my spare time. SHARE is an electronic magazine for teachers or someone else of English as a foreign or second language.

I caught the characteristics and readership of this e-magazine SHARE at first and visited the home website later. Here I can read all the past issues of SHARE in the section SHARE ARCHIVES. In addition, almost there are several links we can follow to get further information for English learning in every issue of SHARE. It is an independent publication and all the announcements and comments are absolutely free of charge here.

I pay more attention on the divers publications all over the world resulting from the fact that editing and publishing is my major in home university. With the development of science and technology, I now witness firsthand the dramatic social and economic changes engendered by the proliferation of digital technologies in the field of publishing. These changes have created the highly sophisticated information society. I have acquired a heightened sense of urgency about improving attention in this complex society.

I will share my opinions and experience about the "wheel-of-time" group tomorrow!

I'm so sorry.

I found two groups.

First group is "International baseball league". I was an amateur baseball player and manager in my country. So, I want to play baseball in here and find a team. By joining this group, I can experience different baseball culture.

Second, I joined some travel groups such as "travelbulgaria", "London friends" and "travel Spain" I will trip to Europe next year. To use these groups, I can have information. So, I can save time and money while traveling. Also, groups enable me to make international friends

Hi Jenn! Sorry I'm late.

I found it really difficult to find interesting virtual communities in Yahoo or Google. Rather, I visited the website that you recommended to us which is eHow.com. I found so many interesting information on eHow.com.
It was really good that eHow has a variety of categories that I could look around.
Especially I found the food part very very interesting. Since I need to cook while living in the US, this website would do a lot of help for me. I liked that eHow provides video that I can see and follow.
Also, I am interested in backpacking, and there was an article called: "How to Pack a Backpack for Camping?"
and "How to Pack Food for Backpacking". I commented on that article. And there are so many other information that I really love!:)*

Hello!

I took your recommendation and checked out eHow.com and found several great topics. Specifically, I selected a blog entitled "How to Retire at 50". I not only read several articles, but participated by commenting on at least one article.

I also searched for a community related to hiking. I found one that turned out to be in several languages and a little outside of my interests. I will continue to search for something appropriately fitting my interest. Additionally, I am following CNN and receiving regular Tweets from them as well as work related tourism communities.

Although somewhat overwhelming right now, I definitely see the long term benefits of not only understanding social media, but actively participating in it. I look forward to becoming more comfortable and proficient at all mediums of social media.

Hi Jenn,

It took me a long time, a lot of hours searching for online communities that i could be helpful with, and i finally decided to go back to the fundamentals !

I am a french girl, so I love cooking, and discovering news types of food, so I decided to join a group for tips and sharing about cooking ! I made my first post, asking for tips about American/californian food !

Hello Jeannette,

I found 2 groups and they are both about "food" :).
First I found a group where they talk about italian restaurants hier in LA. Because I'm always searching for a good thin crusted pizza here in america (I love them) I asked them where I can find one in Riverside!
The other group I posted on is about recipes for meals with vegetables because I love vegetables. My sister hates it so I always try to cook something for her with vegatables. But till now she didn't liked one of my meals so maybe they can tell me a good recipe that she might like!

Now I am in the Travel Photography group in Flickr, where I can share my travel pictures and learn from others. Moreover, people discus problems in travel photography in the group. I can learn lots of information. I am also surprised at that people are so friendly to answer your questions and give suggestions. Hello Jenn !

Finally found my online communities (than you Ehow ! ) :

The first one is called "Paris tourism" It was interesting because you can share about what you can visit in Paris, and what are the most beautiful places.

Then, I found another one called "How to cook French crepes" . Crepes are a typical dish from the west part on France, an area called "Bretagne" and they use specific recipes. So it was also intesresting to share about that.

Wish you a great weekend. See you on Wednesday !

After much consideration and searching I joined two communities that I look forward to participating in. I used eHow and found "Money How To's." This community is an advice and sharing site that relates to money matters and particularly planning for retirement. Since I am interested in retiring early, this site will be helpful and allow me to interact with people of the same mindset.

I also enjoy reading and found "Goodreads", a community that recommends, rates, compares, and tracks your reading choices. It also includes forming book clubs and covers news related to authors and books.

See you!
